Why Truth?

I’ve been asked by a few people why Veritas? How do you plan on marketing that? Doesn’t that seem a little high brow and “Latin”?

Now, I get what they’re getting at. Why use a foreign language as the name of this new church and why make it kind of inaccessible to some people if they don’t know that’s language. Honestly, I thought the Latin sounds kinda cool. But the biggest reason we went with it is because of what it means. The Truth.

There’s nothing more needed today than the Truth. Whether it’s in relationships, in our media and news, in how we conduct business, or just in receiving your coffee order we all need the Truth. I can’t even count the number of times that telling a lie got me in trouble. It seems like I was almost always in trouble as a kid and it was lie after lie that covered up lies that kept burying me deeper in  trouble. Then one day that advice from my mom finally sank in, “telling the truth the first time saves so much trouble.” How true she was. Sure I cover up things from time to time. I try to make myself out to be better or smarter than I am, or I sneak a snack here and there trying to keep it from my kids or wife so I don’t have to share. These lies break relationships.

But the Truth is freeing. It gives you a clean slate because there’s nothing to hide anymore. Once you live in the Truth things can actually move forward and real, deep healing and reconciliation can start in those broken relationships. Trust can begin to be rebuilt and renewed within us and between  us. The Truth really can set us free. Jesus once said that, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)

We’re not far from starting this new church plant called Veritas Community. Maybe the name Veritas might make a few heads scratch, but our hope is that people will see the Truth of Jesus and how much He accepts us for who we are and what we do. His Truth doesn’t just shine a light on what we do to cover things up, but that He provides a place and a way for us to be free and find healing. The Truth doesn’t need to be marketed. It doesn’t need explaining. We need the Truth now just as much as ever. Keep checking back and see how we discover the Truth in our lives more and more each day.
